FICA Requirements for Individuals and Sole Proprietorships

South African Citizen
 
  • A valid South African issued green bar-coded identity document;
OR a smart card identity document;
OR an unabridged birth certificate for minors (under 18 years).

If not available, one of the following documents accompanied by a declaration explaning why the green bar-coded ID or Smart Card can not be provided: a) a valid South African driver’s licence; b) a valid South African passport; c) a valid temporary identity document.

  • Contact details (i.e. telephone number, fax number, e-mail address, etc).

  • A document issued by the South African Revenue Services bearing the individual's income tax registration number. Only applicable if the individual has been issued an income tax registration number. 

  • Authority to act (if applicable): power of attorney / letter of appointment from the court and authorised signatories' resolution. Identity document, physical residential address and contact details of persons authorised to act.

  • A power of attorney / letter of appointment from the court / mandate authorising representative(s) to establish a business relationship or enter into a transaction on behalf of the individual (if applicable).

  • FICA information and documents must be provided in respect of individual persons who represent the individual / sole proprietorship (if applicable)Click here to view a comprehensive list of the information and documents required for these connected persons.

Foreign National
 
  • A valid passport;
OR a valid maroon identity document;
OR a valid section 24 permit verified in writing by the Department of Home Affairs;
OR a letter from an Embassy or Consulate stating the full names passport number and residential address of the individual.

  • Contact details (i.e. telephone number, fax number, e-mail address, etc).

  • A document issued by the South African Revenue Services bearing the individual's income tax registration number. Only applicable if the individual has been issued an income tax registration number. 

  • A power of attorney / letter of appointment from the court / mandate authorising representative(s) to establish a business relationship or enter into a transaction on behalf of the individual (if applicable).

Additional requirements for sole proprietorships
 
  • Operating name

  • Proof of physical operating address. Only applicable if the physical operating address is different to the physical residential address. Click here to view a comprehensive list of acceptable documents. 

PLEASE NOTE:

  1. All documents provided must be either:

    • An original, or
    • A copy of the original document sighted by a Basic Sense employee, or
    • A copy of the original document certified by an independent Commissioner of Oaths (Certification must contain the full names, title and signature of the Commissioner of Oaths and wording should stipulate "Certified a true copy of". Where the document has more than one page, the stamp/full commission must appear on either the front or back page and the Commissioner must initial every page of the document in between.)
